Go online to Maricopa County MCACC "Big Fix" Program (http://www.maricopa.gov/pets/pdf/BigFix.pdf) and print out paperwork to get up to 4 dogs and 4 cats fixed for FREE at one of their participating veterinarians. You will be asked to pay for pain medication, but it is very reasonable, and that is the only charge. There are four different programs offered for shots and license, but if you just want your animal fixed then it is FREE. The voucher is sent to your home and you have three months to make the appointment.

When is the right time to spay or neuter?

There are many considerations about when to spay or neuter. Click here to read  about the effects of prepubertal spaying and neutering. There are many who believe that spaying/neutering too young can cause joint/growth problems.

There are many more considerations to think about when considering the time frame to spay and neuter. Here are some other questions:

  •  Dog size: Physical growth, growth plates, etc.
  • If you delay neutering, can you keep him isolated from any females in season? And, is your home secure enough to keep him from wandering until they reach that golden age, 1 year?
  • Are there behavior issues associated with keeping the dog intact? I.e. Marking, posturing, wandering off and male dominance behaviors associated with intact dog?  Is the new puppy (pet) owner willing or able to handle a male that might be more dominant if kept intact?  Is the female "bitchy" and hard for a pet owner to control?  Many males who experience a breeding situation, even if it is an accident, can become wanderers ever after they are neutered, unless the pet owner has a very secure yard.  Some dogs when left intact, don't even have these issues.  So, it depends on the individual dog.
  • Is your yard fenced securely enough to protect the pup at the onset of sexual maturity?
