I am so thankful for Milk strips! Due to this simple test, I am still sleeping through the night. Last year at this time, I was setting an alarm for every 2 hours and waking up to check on our bulging Turbolina. This year, I am sleeping!

Tiko and Turbolina (above picture) connected during her foal heat in 2006 which put her due date somewhere around April 16, 2007.

Milk test strips are really just strips that folks use to test the water hardness in swimming pools. I bought ours from Nurenberg Scientific Supply in Portland for about $60 for 100 strips. They can be ordered by phone at (503) 246-8297. I cut our strips in half to make them last longer. Our science experiment every night involves precise measurement of .5 cc of Turbolina's  milk mixed with 3 cc of distilled water. There are 4 squares on the strip.  We dip the strips in the mixture for 4 seconds. If all 4 squares change color within 60 seconds, I will start setting an alarm every night and spread straw. Here she is big bellied with baby!
As of April 13, 2007 only 1.5 squares are changing on our milk strips. According to them, we have a ways to go.
And, it's all his fault.
April 22nd, 2 1/2 are changing...not tonight!
So far, as of April 24th, we are at 3 3/4. That 4th one's just not quite changing See the little bit of green left in that 4th square? She is not ready to foal.
TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT!!!!! April 27th and all 4 changed within 7 seconds!!!! It is incredible and we know it's tonight!

Tom Thumb...born Friday, April 27th, 2007!!
